Recently, I was introduced to the beautiful world of icaros through a gifted plant medicine facilitator. These ancient, sacred medicine songs — deeply rooted in the indigenous cultures of South America — opened my heart to a new way of understanding healing, consciousness, and the profound power of words.

The word “icaro” derives from a South American indigenous colloquialism for “magic song.” And indeed, these songs are magical in their ability to catalyze profound healing and awareness, to guide and support those who seek transformation, and to bring clarity to what was once shrouded in mystery.

Icaros are traditionally sung by shamans, healers, and medicine practitioners during sacred plant medicine ceremonies. These songs are considered to carry the spirit and energy of the plants themselves, serving as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms. Through melody and vibration, icaros guide the listener on an inner journey, revealing hidden aspects of the self, releasing emotional blockages, and facilitating deep healing.

Each icaro is unique, often received by the practitioner through a process of profound connection with the plant spirits, dreams, and visions. The songs carry the wisdom of generations, passed down orally and energetically from one healer to another, embodying the essence of the sacred medicine. The melodies and words are said to speak directly to the soul, resonating with parts of ourselves that lie beyond the reach of ordinary language.

While most of us may never experience the deep cultural context of icaros or the plant medicine ceremonies they are woven into, we can still draw inspiration from the ethos and energy they represent. At their core, icaros remind us of the power of words and sound to transform, heal, and connect us more deeply with ourselves and with one another.

Every word we speak carries a vibration, a subtle energy that can either harm or heal, create or destroy. When we speak to ourselves or others, we have a choice: to use words as tools of connection, compassion, and understanding or to wield them carelessly in ways that create division and pain. Inspired by icaros, we can begin to see our everyday speech as a form of sacred song, one that has the potential to heal or harm.

Bringing the Energy of Icaros into Our Own Lives:

  1. Speaking with Intention: Icaros are sung with clear intention — to heal, to guide, to protect, to connect. In our daily lives, we can bring a similar intention to the words we speak. Before speaking, we might ask ourselves: Are my words coming from a place of love and truth? Do they reflect my highest self, or are they being driven by fear, anger, or judgment? By setting a clear intention for our words, we can transform even the most mundane conversation into an opportunity for connection and healing.
  2. Finding Our Own Medicine Songs: While we may not sing traditional icaros, we can create our own “medicine songs” — words, affirmations, or phrases that resonate with us on a deep level, that remind us of our strength, our beauty, and our innate ability to heal. These might be simple phrases like “I am enough,” “I trust the process of life,” or “I am connected to all things.” When spoken or sung with intention, these words can become powerful tools for self-healing and transformation.
  3. Listening to the Inner Voice: Icaros are often received by practitioners through moments of deep connection and listening. We, too, can cultivate a practice of listening — not to the outside noise, but to our inner voice, our intuition, our deeper knowing. Through practices like meditation, journaling, or spending time in nature, we can quiet the mind and listen for the subtle messages that our soul is trying to communicate. What is our inner voice saying to us? What are the “icaros” that are waiting to be heard within our own hearts?
  4. Creating Spaces of Healing with Our Words: In the same way that icaros create a sacred space for healing, we can create healing spaces in our everyday interactions. We can speak words that uplift, encourage, and support. We can choose to listen deeply and empathetically, offering others the gift of our presence and understanding. We can cultivate conversations that are not only about exchanging information but about sharing our true selves, our vulnerabilities, and our dreams.

Icaros are believed to have the power to rearrange the patterns and frequencies of our energy field, almost like tuning an instrument back into harmony. As these vibrations ripple through our being, they gently shift and reconfigure the energetic waves that govern our thoughts, emotions, and physical state. This transformation can allow us to release stagnant energy, unburden old traumas, and embrace a new way of seeing and understanding ourselves and the world around us. In a sense, through the power of these songs, we can become new versions of ourselves — more open, aware, and aligned with our true essence.

While we may never fully grasp the profound cultural significance and ancient wisdom embodied in icaros, we can honor the spirit of these sacred songs by bringing their essence into our own lives. We can treat our words as vessels of healing energy, choosing to speak with intention, kindness, and truth. We can remember that our voices, like the icaros, have the power to guide, to soothe, and to connect us to something greater than ourselves.

The magic of icaros lies not only in the words themselves but in the space they create — a space where healing, connection, and transformation become possible. Let us strive to create such spaces in our own lives, through the words we choose to speak and the energy we choose to bring into the world.
In drawing inspiration from icaros, it is essential to honor the cultures, traditions, and people who carry and gift these sacred songs. Their wisdom is a deep wellspring, cultivated over generations with great care, reverence, and respect for the natural world. We can learn from their example, not by appropriating or mimicking their practices, but by finding our own authentic ways to connect with the magic and power of words.

Just as the shamans and healers receive their icaros through deep connection, we, too, can find our own magic songs within the fabric of our everyday lives. We can become the facilitators of our own healing, using the power of our words to create, to inspire, and to transform.

May we speak with intention, listen with presence, and sing the songs that are uniquely ours. And in doing so, may we discover the profound healing and awareness that comes from embracing the true magic of our own words.

Let us remember: we all have the capacity to create our own icaros, our own medicine songs, that speak to the heart of who we are and the world we wish to create.

With our breath as our guide, this journey invites us to reconnect with our authentic selves, grow through life’s challenges, and rediscover the joy of simply being.
By rooting ourselves in intentional breath and aligning with our values, we can nurture resilience, discover deeper self-awareness, and, most importantly, create space to grow into the life we’ve always hoped for.

The Roots of the THRIVE framework are all about creating a solid foundation by grounding yourself in who you are and where you are right now. This stage combines Therapeutic Breath with reflective practices, like a life audit and values audit, to help you gain clarity on your current state and what truly matters to you. Here, we also focus on your breathing patterns, identifying ways to improve them because breathing well is at the root of all health—it impacts everything from your energy to your emotional resilience. Embracing your response-ability, or the power to choose how you respond to life’s challenges, is also key. Like roots stabilising a tree, this foundation grounds you, helping you approach each day with balance, strength, and a sense of possibility.

The Trunk of the THRIVE framework represents your inner strength and stability, the core that supports you through life’s challenges. At this stage, we focus on Happy Breath, a practice that nurtures emotional resilience and balance by connecting to the pillars of the body and heart. Just as the trunk holds up a tree, these practices help you find stability within, supporting your well-being in a way that feels solid and dependable. With techniques for emotional regulation and heart-centred breathing, the trunk stage invites you to cultivate calmness and compassion, building a strong core that enables you to weather whatever comes your way. This stage is all about standing tall, feeling centred, and rooting deeply into a sense of self-trust.

The Branches of the THRIVE framework symbolise growth beyond old limitations, stretching outward to reach new possibilities. This stage is all about Rewiring Breath, where we work on releasing limiting beliefs and patterns that may be holding you back. Just as branches extend outward, here we explore practices like NLP, Havening, EFT, and Conscious Connected Breathing to help you open up to fresh perspectives and transform your mental landscape. The branches stage invites you to reframe old habits and thoughts, creating space for new growth, flexibility, and empowerment. With each breath, you reach a little further, discovering the freedom that comes from letting go of what no longer serves you.

The Leaves of the THRIVE framework represent nourishment and renewal, drawing in light and energy to sustain your inner vitality. In this stage, we focus on Inner Nourishing Breath—practices that nurture your soul and feed your sense of well-being. Just as leaves absorb sunlight to sustain the tree, this stage invites you to take in what truly replenishes you. Through coherence breathing, flower essences, and connecting with your own inner wisdom, the leaves stage is about caring for yourself deeply and consistently. It’s a reminder that nourishment isn’t a luxury; it’s essential for growth. By tuning into what truly sustains you, you cultivate the resilience and vitality needed to flourish.

The Flowers of the THRIVE framework symbolise connection, beauty, and the joy of sharing who we are with others. In this stage, we focus on Vital Connecting Breath, using practices that foster empathy, compassion, and deeper relationships. Just as flowers bloom outwardly, this stage invites us to open up and connect with the world around us. Heart Coherence breathing and Loving Kindness practices are central here, helping you cultivate meaningful connections, both with yourself and others. The flowers remind us that true connection is a gift, bringing colour and vibrancy to life. By nurturing these bonds, you allow your relationships to blossom and enrich your journey.

The Fruit of the THRIVE framework represents the harvest of your journey—embodying empowerment, fulfillment, and purpose. This final stage focuses on Empowering Breath, using conscious connected breathwork to help you embrace your strength and step into your fullest self. Just as the fruit of a tree contains the seeds of new life, this stage is about realising the power and potential you’ve cultivated through each phase of growth. Here, breathwork encourages you to feel grounded in your accomplishments, aligned with your passions, and confident in the path ahead. The fruit stage is your chance to savour the journey, embodying the wisdom, resilience, and vitality you’ve nurtured within.

The THRIVE framework is a journey through growth, resilience, and self-discovery, each stage building on the one before it. Like a tree, our well-being is rooted in a strong foundation, and from there, we reach upward, nourish ourselves, connect with others, and finally harvest the fruits of our inner work. Through intentional breath and thoughtful practices, the THRIVE framework guides us from simply surviving to truly thriving, honouring each step as part of a whole, living process. By tending to our roots, trunk, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruit, we reconnect with ourselves and the world around us in a way that feels grounded, balanced, and deeply fulfilling. In every breath, we find a new beginning, a reminder of our strength, and a pathway toward a life of growth and empowerment.

I would say I am a living example of how it can! When practiced consistently and alongside other supportive methods, which are dependant upon the individual. I needed rest and the space to explore previously unlooked at emotions and cPTSD trauma, so breathwork and meditation, along with a programme of self development and learning really helped.

Breathwork shows promise in helping manage symptoms of depression:

  • Stress reduction: By lowering cortisol levels, breathwork can help alleviate stress-induced depressive symptoms.
  • Mood regulation: Certain techniques may help balance neurotransmitters associated with mood.
  • Increased oxygenation: Better oxygen flow to the brain can potentially improve mood and cognitive function.
  • Mindfulness promotion: Focusing on breath can help break cycles of negative thoughts.
  • Autonomic nervous system balance: This can help regulate emotional responses.
  • Sleep improvement: Better sleep quality, often resulting from breathwork, can positively impact depression.
  • Physical activity: Some breathwork practices involve gentle movement, which can be beneficial for depression.
  • Self-empowerment: Having a tool to manage symptoms can provide a sense of control.
  • Potential for neuroplasticity: Regular practice may support brain changes that could help with depression.

While research is ongoing, some studies have shown positive results. However, breathwork should not replace professional mental health treatment. It’s best used as part of a comprehensive approach to managing depression, ideally under the guidance of a mental health professional.

“Results” is an interesting concept as the idea in itself is subjective, so the timeline for seeing results from breathwork can vary depending on the individual, the results that are hoped for, and the specific practice:

  1. Immediate effects: Some benefits, like reduced stress or improved focus, can be felt after a single session.
  2. Short-term results: Consistent daily practice for 1-2 weeks can lead to noticeable improvements in stress levels and sleep quality.
  3. Medium-term changes: After 4-6 weeks of regular practice, many people report significant improvements in overall well-being, anxiety management, and energy levels.
  4. Long-term benefits: Sustained practice over several months can lead to more profound changes in stress resilience, emotional regulation, and even some physiological markers.

We are all individual, with a complex mix of body needs, soul needs, mind needs, and emotional needs all intertwined. Some individuals may notice changes more quickly than others. It’s important to approach breathwork with patience and consistency. While some benefits can be immediate, the most significant and lasting changes often come with regular, long-term practice.

Lamaze developed in the early 1970’s was specifically developed to aid with pain management during childbirth. It’s common sense therefore that Breathwork shows promise in managing chronic pain in other conditions :

  1. Relaxation response: Deep breathing triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and potentially reducing pain perception.
  2. Stress reduction: By lowering stress levels, breathwork may indirectly alleviate pain, as stress can exacerbate chronic pain conditions.
  3. Mindfulness: Focusing on breath can shift attention away from pain, providing temporary relief.
  4. Improved oxygenation: Better oxygen flow may help reduce muscle tension and improve overall body function.
  5. Endorphin release: Some breathwork techniques may stimulate the release of endorphins, natural pain-relieving chemicals.
  6. Autonomic nervous system regulation: This can help modulate pain signals in the body.
  7. Improved sleep: Better sleep quality, often a result of regular breathwork, can contribute to pain management.

While research is ongoing, some studies have shown positive results for conditions like fibromyalgia, lower back pain, and arthritis. It’s important to note that breathwork should be used as part of a comprehensive pain management strategy, and may not be suitable as a sole treatment. Consulting with healthcare providers or a qualified breathwork facilitator is recommended for tailoring breathwork practices to specific pain conditions.

Breathwork has a profound impact on the nervous system, particularly the autonomic nervous system (ANS):

  1. Parasympathetic activation: Slow, deep breathing stimulates the vagus nerve, activating the “rest and digest” response.
  2. Sympathetic regulation: Certain techniques can help balance the “fight or flight” response, reducing stress and anxiety.
  3. Heart rate variability: Breathwork can improve heart rate variability, an indicator of ANS balance and resilience.
  4. Cortisol reduction: Regular practice can lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
  5. Neurotransmitter balance: Some studies suggest breathwork may influence neurotransmitter levels, potentially affecting mood and stress responses.
  6. Brain wave alteration: Certain breathwork practices have been shown to influence brain wave patterns, promoting relaxation or heightened awareness.
  7. Interoception improvement: Breathwork enhances awareness of internal bodily sensations, strengthening the mind-body connection.

By directly influencing the ANS, breathwork can help regulate various physiological processes, including heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and immune function. This makes it a powerful tool for managing stress, improving emotional regulation, and enhancing overall well-being.

This is based on the intricate connection between our breath, nervous system, and mental state. Practitioners use breathwork for various purposes, including stress reduction, anxiety management, improved focus, enhanced physical performance, and even spiritual exploration.

Breathwork can be practiced alone or guided by an instructor, and it often incorporates elements from various traditions, including yoga, meditation, and certain therapeutic approaches. While some breathwork techniques are simple enough for anyone to try, others may require supervision from a trained professional, especially those that induce altered states of consciousness.

Description

A transformative two-hour breathwork workshop. The session begins with a meditation, leading into the 60-minute conscious connected breathwork session, you will be guided by Lottie throughout. There will be time at the end to share and connect with others (optional), alongside grounding exercises and time for a cup of tea.
